All About Handcut Dovetails with Frank Strazza

Dovetails are considered to be the hallmark of fine joinery and Frank Strazza has been teaching this iconic woodworking joint for years.

Description

In this four-day class Frank will immerse you in cutting this essential furniture joint. You will spend 4 days learning everything you can about dovetails- and doing it all by hand. As part of the class Frank will guide you through the process he uses to create his signature houndstooth dovetails. You may have seen Frank’s dovetails on the cover Fine Woodworking Magazine, however, there is no substitute for in-person instruction. Frank will guide you through the subtleties & complexities of creating this unique and distinctive joint and its variations- through dovetails, half blind (or lapped) dovetails and sliding dovetails. From methods of sawing and chiseling to layout and fitting you will get plenty of hands-on practice. Frank will begin the class with sawing exercises which is really the key to success in any handcut dovetail joinery. Guiding you through the process, from careful layout to sawing, then on to correct chiseling techniques. Proper tools are essential for successfully executing hand cut joinery and either the Lie Nielsen tapered dovetail saw or the Bad Axe dovetail saws are highly recommended. Most other saws on the market will end up frustrating you.                                                                                                                                                                This joint is both beautiful and structural and can be used in everything from bench construction to drawer sides.
